Trying to be helpful without actually doing a thing

My mil has this interesting way of asking if we need anything for our daughter. It goes like this:

"ummm, d-i-l, does the munchkin need clothes? I was going to get her a shirt, but I didn't know."

Well, if it is something she truly NEEDS then we buy it for her, she never goes without. And if you want to get it for her because it is cute or you think it is useful, then buy it - like my parents do.

Sounds like someone doesn`t really WANT to buy stuff but wants to give the appearance of offering to spoil her granddaughter. Both my MIL and mother ignore me when I say my son doesn`t really need any clothes (because as far as NEEDS go he has more than enough clothing to keep him from going naked even if I don`t do any laundry for a week!) and as a result I have so many clothes I have no space for my own stuff! BUT they like spoiling him so I am not going to complain!! THAT is what being a Grandma is all about, your MIL obviously hasn`t read her manual properly! LOL!

she's too busy reading the manual on being a guilt-inducing asshat.

I would take a different approach. Tell her "Yes! I'm so glad you asked. I hope that in the future you'll be willing to help out. I'll be emailing you a list of everything the kids need right now. Please let me know what you are getting, so that I know what is left over to get. Thanks!"

your MIL and mine must be related. that is almost word-for-word the same crap my MIL says. to which i reply, "no thank you. you and i have such differing views on style and quality that buying any clothing for my kids would just be so hard for you. i know you try, though. thanks for thinking of us."

I think she was just making sure her granddaughter doesn't go naked. You know how you are, not properly feeding and clothing her and all.

We had a whirlwind of a weekend. The 50th anniversary for my inlaws went wonderfully. It was a lot of work, and Courtney's media presentation she made for them made everyone at the dinner party cry. There were about 125 people who attended and we had to set up and then clean up afterwards. Lots of work! But worth it.
Courtney is doing well. She had sinus surgery yesterday. She is home with a drippy, bloody nose, and popping pain pills. She's a trooper, and will be fully recovered in about ten days.
I'm busy visiting all my blog friends, and I have some catching up to do. I will have a new post at my place on Wednesday.

Oh, BTW, asshat has been added to my vocabulary, thanks to you. LOVE that word!

My MIL buys ugly ass clothes at WALMART, because on Christmas Day the quantity openned makes up for the quality. Most things are all solids like a solid long sleeve top with a solid pair of pants - UGHhhhhhhhhh! Or my favorite anything with butterflies because she likes them.

And don't get me started on my gifts ( well oky I gotta share) I usually get a check (thank God) and THEN... 3-5 regifts from her stash in the basement. She actually has a garbage can (new not used) full of what she calls token gifts that she can't throw away. And they usually become my presents. I have a beautous bright red apple tealight holder, and 1 silver candle stick, and a few other treasures waiting for the next yard sale!

Be thankful it was only butterflies, apron strings. It could have been kittens with roses or a unicorn leaping over a rainbow..with a rose.
